My Story
“The Serendipitous Path to UX: A Journey of Discovery”
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents – Nah, I am just kidding.
In reality, my journey into the world of UX design was less dramatic, but no less transformative.
My previous life in business administration and event management taught me to listen, to empathize, and to connect.
I navigated diverse teams across different corners of the globe, soaking up cultures like a curious sponge.
And then, during an MBA internship, it happened.
I stumbled upon a problem—a delightful puzzle that whispered, “Welcome to UX.”
And so began my love affair with simplicity and accessibility.
Because in this profession, we don’t just design interfaces; we craft experiences that touch lives.
Whether it’s a sleek app or a friendly website, UX is about relatability, about making technology dance to the rhythm of human needs.
So here I am, a UX enthusiast, weaving pixels and empathy into a tapestry of usability.
Because in this stormy sea of digital chaos, I’m the lighthouse guiding users to smoother shores.
And that, my friend, is why I adore this profession.
Because it’s not just about pixels; it’s about people.
And that’s my story—a gradual realization, a serendipitous journey.
Now, let’s create some magic together.
My Journey
During my MBA internship, I frequented a tea shop that was located between my workplace and a motorcycle garage. I was sipping my tea one day when I noticed the garage was vacant. The fact that this garage was failing defied logic. It was the only garage in the entire commercial hub.
There were plenty of motorcycle owners in the area that frequently required vehicle serving. In fact, a buddy of mine had contacted me a few days before, claiming he had to drive to an area 15 kilometers away because, “Dude, there are no garages near our office.”
Why was the garage always empty? Did people know it was there? Did the garage offer relevant services? I had to know!
I began discussing the garage with folks at my office and friends in the area. During some of my tea breaks, I chatted with the owner. I also looked up other similar garages online. I didn’t realize until much later that by doing so I was conducting stakeholder interviews and market research. My research led me to the insight that the lack of a digital presence and identity was making the garage less accessible to its customers.
At this point, I was invested. Over the next few months, I spent my tea breaks (and evenings) assisting the garage build an online presence. I contacted a few of my digital marketing peers, and together we built a website for the garage, as well as set up social accounts. This was my first UX project.
Spending my tea breaks in a garage building a website and digital strategy inspired me to think about other problems that might have gone unnoticed. The company that I worked for at the time was going through an acquisition, so I had a lot of downtimes. I eventually defined a set of problems that I wanted to solve. I was inspired to go out and start something of my own. So I quit my job and committed to my ideas.
I recruited friends and colleagues to work on two ideas: a customizable event planning tool tailored to individual concepts and budgets, and a marketplace for fitness enthusiasts to find healthy, calorie-conscious recipes. During the initial months of tireless effort, I developed my skills as a UX researcher and analyst. Experience truly is the best teacher.
As I was engaging with more startups and transitioning into a UX professional, I decided to diversify my skills. I pursued formal education in UX-related subjects to expand my understanding of user behavior, design thinking, and UX research.
